Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
