The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
